NVTR in the 2009 National Memorial Day Parade
Written by Jim Cowgill
Tuesday, 09 June 2009

The Northern Virginia Trail Riders (NVTR), joined by members of the Family Offroad Riders of Prince William County (FORPWC), the Potomac Vintage Riders (PVR), and the Road and Trail (R & T) Club, launched 40-plus vehicle and 50 riders in this year’s National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25.

Joining 140-plus other parade units, this caravan passed-in-review before Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and thousands of cheering spectators.

Former NVTR Secretary John Roberts started this ball rolling, suggesting an off-road motorized parade unit two years ago. This second appearance included more than twice as many vehicles and riders as the first.

I’ll list as many contributors to the event’s success as I can think of; apologies if I missed anyone; know your efforts were appreciated anyway.

President Brad Convis—brought banners and mounting hardware he’d stored since last year.

Trailmaster Don Kirkpatrick—brought miniature American flags for distribution, waiver forms.

Secretary Tommy Dietz—procured Helmet Skinz for all.

Treasurer Joe Epperson—provided loaner jerseys for “honorary NVTR members” for the parade.

Adam Mancewicz, architect of lead vehicle banner frames, was a constant cheerleader.

John Soma—provided drinks and snacks, assembled and disassembled (with Matthew Copeland’s help) banner setup in the field.

Jerry Compton, guest rider from Fauquier County—provided Rhino RUV; decorated with two “V for Victory!” American flags; our go-to guy for required minimum parade vehicle for two years. Partners John Capuria and Kenneth Stanley “got ‘er done” many ways, helping out in the and Assembly and Dispersal Areas on parade day.

Al Conte, of Potomac Vintage Riders, had Jerry and crew transport his Can-Am (!) bike to the parade, adding lots of historical interest to the group. PVR made a generous grant to the parade effort; thanks, Al!

Ernie Audino, of FORPWC (and “interlocking” NVTR member) did an outstanding job coordinating FORPWC’s participation. FORPWC bought two gross miniature American flags for distribution, purchased their own Helmet Skinz.

FORPWC had a crowd-pleasing array of children participating; so did NVTR member J. D. Clanton with his two sons; great job by all young people involved.

Photo-Journalist and NVTR member Steve Boitano covered the event; please post the link where your images can be viewed as soon as it’s “up,” Steve! (Gotta see how that shot of Ernie and me saluting Admiral Mullen turned out!)

Thanks to Will, for the loan of his mega-trailer to transport Ken Moore’s Kubota lead vehicle.

As for Ken Moore, much obliged for the loan of your RUV; an ideal rolling supply depot, where you issued and recovered jerseys and Helmet Skinz, handed out miniature American flags, and processed waiver forms. I know all parade participants join me in profound condolence, as your brother’s funeral was held the day before the parade.

NOW A WORD FOR OUR SPONSORS!

First, to Jim Roberts, President, American Veterans Center: Thank you for the opportunity you provided all of us to honor America’s fallen heroes.

To Todd Marcocci, Under the Sun Productions, for resources provided.

For Mike, of Motovation Racing (Helmet Skinz) for custom headgear cover for Brigadier General Audino, and promotional consideration.

For Editor Jerry Smith of Motorcycle Times, for event preview publicity.

For P Street Giant Foods, for transportation assistance.

For manager Yared of U Street Parking, Inc., for City Center (9th & I) lot consideration.

Finally, I extend my own personal thanks to all who participated and supported the effort; I appreciate the privilege of working with this dedicated group of off-roaders!

2009 Spring Trail Ride
Written by Tommy Dietz
Tuesday, 09 June 2009

The Spring Trial Ride was a wet one this year. Despite the rain, 69 riders turned out to ride and seemed happy rain or shine. With the donations from participants, close to $2,000 was raised for the Optimist Club of King George, a great cause - funding college scholarships for King George County's youth.

Thanks to each and every participant and their family for coming out to this truly outstanding event. NVTR would also like to thank the event sponsors: Coleman Powersports, Fredericksburg Motor Sports, Motorcycle Factory Inc. and JT Motorsports.

2008 Shenandoah 500 - Wrap Up

The Shenandoah 500 AMA Suzuki National Dual Sport was another ride for the record books this year! With Support from Suzuki USA, Clark manufacturing, Coleman Powersports, Dutrows Honda, Ellicott City Motorsports, Fredericksburg Motorsports, JT Motorsports, Loudon Motorsports, Mortons BMW, Ridersville Cycles, and Twiggs Cycles, there were plenty of giveaways to add a great conclusion to warm weather, record turn out, and record fund raising for the Mt. Solon VFD, Brandywine South Fork VFD, and the Riverside Methodist church.

NVTR thanks all the riders for coming out and helping make this another great event!

Finally, We ask for your help - We can't host this event without the support of the U.S. Forest Service - would you please take a moment to send the Ranger (Elwood Burge) and the Special Use Permit Mgr (Christian Canary) a letter or email thanking them for their support? These folks got the gates to all the roads we used opened in time for the event and worked closely with us to adjust our route to avoid the other events going on in the Forest last weekend.

When you contact them, please be sure to identify yourself and state you are a participant in the Shenandoah 500 Dual Sport trail ride.

Taskers Gap Fee Program!
Written by Web Master
Wednesday, 06 June 2007

After years of supporting the Taskers Gap Trail Complex through regular maintenance work days, combined with a few RTP grants, it's become clear the best way to improve the trails is to implement a user fee at the trail system so heavier, regular maintenance can be performed. We, and the Forest Service, just don't have the funds to get it done and the trails reflect that result.

Beginning July 14, a $5 per day, or $30 per year user fee will be implemented to raise the funds needed to improve the trails. This is a great program as nearly all the funds are required to be spent on the trails. It may take a little time to raise the funds to begin work, but with each arm band sold we get closer to bringing machinery up into the trails and begin work!

Thank you for your support of this important program!

For more information and FAQ's, check out the Forest Service web site at:

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/newsroom/2007/05/ohv-fees.shtml

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/recreation/ohv-fees-faqs.shtml

Does this mean an end to NVTR's involvement in maintaining the Trails at Taskers Gap? NO! NVTR will continue to be there to apply for RTP funding assistance, build bridges, install signs, remove downed trees, etc.

What it means is that in additional to those projects we typically perform, larger projects can now be considered as well.
